The Kentucky Derby is America’s longest continually held sporting event and one of the most well-known races around the world. Often deemed ‘The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports’, the Group 1 race held at Churchill Downs features 20 horses running on dirt over a mile and a quarter, with a $5 million purse.
First run in 1875, the Kentucky Derby serves as the first leg of the ‘Triple Crown’ – a series of three horse races for three-year-old thoroughbreds. The latter two races (the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes) are also HBA ‘Crown Jewel’ events.
As the most-attended horse race in the USA, Churchill Downs ensures a fun-filled, jam-packed schedule for all 150,000 attendees.
