The Randox Grand National at Aintree Racecourse is one of horseracing’s most historic and famous events.
First run in 1839, the stamina-sapping marathon steeplechase covers four-and-a-quarter miles, with 40 horses jumping 30 fences over two laps – it is commonly referred to as ‘the ultimate test of horse and rider’.
As the most valuable jump race in Europe with a prize fund of £1 million, it the only ‘Crown Jewel’ event that takes place over jumps.
Aside from the on-track action, the Aintree Grand National is a prestigious fashion, lifestyle and entertainment event. Opening Day (Thursday) launches the three-day Festival Meeting from Liverpool where the eyes of the world watch horses create history, trainers in tears and riders become stars, heroes and legends. Ladies day on the Friday, is a day marked in the calendar months in advance and shines the light not just on the champion horses and jockeys, but Liverpool’s best dressed.
